A. Fido is a dog and dogs are friendly.
B. All pets are animals, and most (but not necessarily all) dogs are pets. We cannot conclude that Fido is an animal.
C. Most dogs are pets, so it is more likely that Fido is an animal.
D. Most dogs are pets and dogs are friendly, but this does not mean that pets that are not dogs are friendly.
A. Some, not all, houses have windows.
B. Ebenezer's house has a back door and houses with back doors have gardens (remember, we go by the statements, not necessarily by common sense).
C. Some houses do have windows, so Ebenezer's house might have windows.
D. No houses have sails, not even Ebenezer's.
Using common sense and logic, the meaning of "star" here is "celestial body," not a Hollywood celebrity, since most of the statements refer to stars of the sort that are celestial bodies. The clue told us the way to go. The statement about Warren Beatty uses the "celebrity" sense of "star" and this sense does not apply to any of the other statements, including "stars are not planets." Though there is a pretty tangled philosophical discussion that Fred is begging off on here, the clue does let common sense enter the picture. No statement (on the common-sense face of it) tells us that "stars" as celebrities are not planets, only that "stars" as celestial bodies are not planets.
A. Warren Beatty is not a star in the sense meant by the other statements, so we cannot conclude that he is in the sky.
B. The Sun is a star in the correct sense and stars are in the sky.
C. The Sun is a star in the correct sense and stars are not planets.
D. We know that "stars" as celestial bodies are not planets but we do not have a statement that "stars" as celebrities are not planets. Even though common knowledge tells us that Warren Beatty is not a planet, within the given information he very well could be!
A. Scrooge's wife and daughter are redheads, but Scrooge is not necessarily a redhead also. This is a test of logic, not genetics!
B. Scrooge's wife and daughter are redheads and everyone in his family is tall, so at least two redheads are tall (and "at least two" qualifies as some).
C. When Scrooge carries a briefcase he is busy, and when he walks to work he carries a briefcase, so he is busy when he walks to work.
D. There is nothing stated about Scrooge's means of transportation when he does not walk to work.
A. Only all black cats are black, not necessarily all cats.
B. Cassius is black and a cat, so there is at least one cat that is black.
C. We only know that black cats are not dogs, not that all cats are not dogs.
D. Cassius is a black cat and black cats are not dogs.
A. There are at least ten red cars, since there are eleven in Oklahoma! But an if/then statement works only in one direction and cannot be reversed. So we cannot say that if there are at least ten red cars in Oklahoma! then Plato's car is red.
B. There are more than ten blue cars, the eleven in Oklahoma! If there are more than ten blue cars then Plato's car is blue.
C. There are eleven red and eleven blue cars and eleven is identical to eleven.
D. There are eleven red and eleven blue cars. Twice eleven is 22, so there are at least 22 cars in Oklahoma!
A. Only some jazz singers are women. We do not know that Ella is one of these jazz singers from any other statement.
B. Ella is a jazz singer and jazz singers can improvise.
C. This follows from the reasoning in "A." Since we do not know that Ella if a female jazz singer, we do not know whether or not Ella uses a microphone.
D. The statement (1) "all jazz singers can improvise" is not qualified at all. Male jazz singers are jazz singers and all jazz singers can improvise, when using a microphone or, given our information, at any other time!
There are 15 correct answers out of 28 total possible choices. Choosing an incorrect answer is as much an error as missing a correct answer. So subtract all wrong choices from 15. If you got 14 out of 15 of the correct answers but also selected a wrong answer, you would subtract one for the correct answer you missed and one for the incorrect answer you selected, giving you a score of 13. Use the ranges below to see where you stand.
14-15 -- You are a very logical person!
11-13 -- You are a fairly logical person.
09-11 -- You are logical, but sharpen it up!
00-09 -- Review your basics and start over.
