Believing her guardian angel, the maiden appeared in the public square at the appointed hour. The landlord was waiting for her, a smug grin on his face. With everyone in the village present, it was a suspenseful moment.
The landlord presented the maiden with the bag, which she cheerfully accepted. She then promptly reached
into the bag and pulled out a marble, being careful
that no one there would see it in her closed hand.
She quickly placed the marble into her own purse, then took the bag of remaining marbles and emptied it onto the public square, in full view of everyone.
There was not a red marble to be seen! Thus, it was
logical that the marble she had pulled out and placed into her purse was indeed the red one!
The landlord could not ask her to produce the marble
from her purse, as this would make it clear that he
had cheated and there had never been a red marble in
the bag in the first place.
And the three wicked witches of the other direction
were foiled in their scheme, and had to content
themselves with churning their cauldron together for
all eternity!
