FredsHouse is here to show that fun and
learning are best when taken together. Sometimes the
difference between the two will be deliberately
blurred, sometimes it will just naturally turn out
that way.
The site is truly intended for kids of all ages from
"one to ninety-two," but areas that work well for
younger children will say so. Every age gets its
turn.
FredsHouse hopes to be a "grreeat" resource
for kids, parents and teachers, both in itself and
for finding other resources on the web for all kinds
of interesting, informational and fun things.
Please note that a link to "Fred's Navigator" is provided on every page. If you get lost or do not have a "back" control on your browser, the Navigator can link you back to any page in FredsHouse.
A very strong effort is made to locate and provide
links to free "stuff," in the belief
that the availabiity of free information and
resources is still one of the best features of the
web.
Additionally, as access to the web has been difficult for some families, because it has been expensive, it
will help if, once on-line, families can find good
things that don't cost them a further dime. (Please
note that the cost of equipment and Internet access
has been falling and perhaps it will come into the
range of many more people in the not-so-distant
future. So sites like FredsHouse may, if
lucky, become even more widely accessible and
useful.)
FredsHouse should challenge kids, students
and viewers to think for themselves.
Often, inverse presentations are used in
mirror-fashion, to stimulate imagination and question preconceived notions. Sometimes the site will appear
to be a puzzle in itself, and a playful thing might
happen "when you least expect it."
Words are used throughout that may not always cater
to the easiest level of understanding, but they are
linked to The Instant
Dictionary. The viewer/reader can look them up at once and return to the text, so that just going through the site will build vocabulary skills.
Fred's Instant Encyclopedia links highlighted text to a web site that Fred feels will give the most comprehensive information on the subject, making FredsHouse even more educational and fun! "Most comprehensive" sometimes means that, while it may not be the "best" site in itself, it will get you to more of the good sites more efficiently, so your exposure will be more thorough in the long run. This is why it is so important to explore links in these sites!
Please be sure to follow links at the sites that FredsHouse references, in addition to Fred's own links, so that even more resources will be available to you.
