APPLES AND ORANGES -- Reach into the box labelled "Apples and Oranges" and pull out a fruit. Suppose it is an apple. That means that the box labelled "Apples and Oranges" must contain apples only and should properly be labelled "Apples." Since you pulled out an apple, you know that the box contains apples. Since you know it is labelled incorrectly, you know it canNOT contain "Apples and Oranges." So it must contain only apples and should be labelled "Apples." Now you know that the box labelled "Oranges" cannot contain only oranges, since it is labelled incorrecty. It must contain apples or apples and oranges. But it does not contain apples, because you know that the box labelled "Apples and Oranges" contains apples. So it must contain apples and oranges and should be labelled "Apples and Oranges." That leaves the box labelled "Apples," which must contain oranges since that is the only option left, and so should be labelled "Oranges." Now, what if you had pulled an orange out the box labelled "Apples and Oranges" instead of an apple?
PAIR OF SOCKS -- Mr. MacGillicuddy pulled out three socks, guaranteeing himself a pair of socks. If the first sock is white and the second sock black, then the third must be either white or black and will pair up with either the first or the second sock. The problem never states whether the pair should be white or black, just that it should be a pair.
THE A-FRAME HOUSE -- MacGillicuddy, Jr. wrote his father this note: "Come on Dad, roosters don't lay eggs!"
