Are the two triangles spinning
in the same direction? Are you sure?
|
Perhaps the FredsHouse Triangle is an optical
illusion. If you look at it long enough you can see
it reverse direction, going from spinning clockwise
to spinning counter-clockwise. If it is driving you
too crazy, you can use Fred's
Navigator to go to any other room in
FredsHouse or you can go to Fred's more fun Main Page One, but then you
would miss a lot of adventures that launch from right
here!
Now... The question "Are the two triangles spinning
in the same direction?" is also a question of logic.
If you can see it going clockwise at one time and
then counter-clockwise at another time, then it must
not be rotating in either direction! The sense of
directional rotation is coming from the viewer and is
not characteristic of the triangle itself at all. So
just what is it doing?
To get some practice in applying logic and to test
your logic skills, FredsHouse offers The Logic Test, along with a
scoring system to let you know where you stand when
you complete the answers. Or where you
understand...
Fred has heard it said that motion is relative to the
observer (maybe some fellow named Albert
Einstein). Fred has also heard it said that
rotation is an exception to this relativity (if you
were spinning in outer space you would know whether
you were spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise,
no?). But if you study the Triangle you might see
that there could be a kind of relativity even in your
perception of rotational direction. Remember that the
argument the Catholic Church had with
Galileo was over whether the earth stood still
and the Heavens rotated around it, as the Catholic
Church maintained, or whether the earth rotated and
also revolved around the sun, as Galileo, following Copernicus, maintained!
